A Home. A Winery. A Feeling.

Just steps to the surrounding vineyards and the center of Meursault, Charmelieu (meaning 'charming place') is the ideal home while exploring Burgundy. This 200-year old former vineyard workers' house retains original features such as exposed wood beams, interior stone walls & niches, oak and ceramic tile floors, and stone fireplaces. Completely gutted and renovated in 2005 and refurnished & updated in 2012/13, Charmelieu retains it's old world charm with the convenience of modern amenities. Owners Michael and Christie Shaps offer recommendations for restaurants and attractions, plus private wine tasting of Maison Shaps wines upon request.

Maison Shaps

Founded originally in 2004 as Maison Shaps & Roucher-Sarrazin, the winery was taken over by Michael Shaps in 2012. Continuing with the same philosophy, Maison Shaps is a small “garage-iste” winery producing less than 12,000 bottles per year from some of Burgundy’s finest appellations and vineyard sites. Michael oversees the leased vineyard sites and produces wines using traditional Burgundian techniques, with the objective of making authentic wines that exemplify the rich heritage of the Burgundian villages.

The winemaking takes place in the cuverie (tank room), a former garage that is situated over the main cave that is capable of aging 60 barrels. The secondary cave is located under the main residence where the reds go through the second year of aging. The cuverie is designed to work in a traditional gravity flow method.
